This week, I continue to refine and develop my GAME plan.
In the interest of monitoring my progress, I will ask myself four questions: Am
I finding the information and resources that I need? Do I need to modify my
action plan? What have I learned so far? And, what new questions have arisen?
Am I
finding the information and resources I need?
I have a copy of the documents for all of the modules I
will be teaching. I have started reading over and studying these plans. As for
spending time over the summer with the teacher in the position before me, our
schedules have not matched at all to this point. Because it is summer vacation,
I have spent quite a bit of time traveling. He has been on vacation also. I am
out of town now for the next two weeks. When I get home, I will have
approximately ten days before I have students in my classroom! I am still
hoping to spend some time in the classroom with the other teacher before school
starts. I have talked with him over the phone, and we have emailed and sent
texts back and forth about various questions I have had. Spending time in the
classroom has also been difficult because of limited access to the building.
The times that I have had available have been times when the administration was
gone on vacation. This part has been very frustrating and leaves me feeling unprepared.
I have had very little success finding blogs or websites
written by career technology teachers. If anyone has suggestions on keywords to
search, or knows of sites about career technology, I would love some input.
Think about the old “Industrial Arts” or “shop” classes with technology
incorporated in them. That is what I will be teaching. Someone suggested that I
consider starting a Deca Club. I looked that up on Google and found that it is
about marketing, finance, hospitality, and management for high school and
college students. This does not match what I teach at all.
Do I
need to modify my action plan?
I do not feel like my action plan is very effective at
this point. This could be because it is summer time and I do not have access to
the resources like I would during the school year. I think that the ideas that
I have are good ones, but the timing is off. So yes, I need to change what I am
doing right now since carrying out my GAME plan needs to be more than just good
ideas. Perhaps I need to focus on studying the lesson plans that I have for the
modules. At least that would give me some familiarity with the programs I will
be teaching. Then, when I do get time in the building, I can work on learning
the equipment and machinery.
What
have I learned so far?
I have learned that finding resources is very important.
I feel stuck because I cannot connect with the appropriate people, equipment,
and websites. I have learned that action means ‘doing.’ I need to get in there
and get my hands dirty. I cannot just keep reading about it and thinking about
it. I have learned that technology comes in many forms. I have an extensive
list of equipment, but my hands are still tied when it comes to integrating
technology in a way that is most familiar to students.
What
new questions have arisen?
One question that I have been thinking about lately is, “How
can I integrate what I am learning about instructional technology with the
technology I will be using in career technology?” It is amazing to me that a
course on technology can be so outdated in its implementation. The lesson plans for this class were written
sixteen years ago!
I wonder how the new common core standards will affect my
class. In Georgia, technology instruction is becoming a focus area. How will I
need to change my program to meet those standards? What does the future hold? Will
I be ready to teach when school begins in August? I feel like I have many more questions than
answers at this point.
Working through this process has been good for me. “The
GAME plan requires you to think about and take steps to direct your learning
process, specifically while learning about technology and how to integrate it
into the curriculum” (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009, p. 3). This course
could not have happened at a more appropriate time. Because I am changing
content areas, I need to plan a course of action. The GAME plan has helped me
to focus on what needs to be done.

Debbie,
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about my old "shop" classes and thought they were usually about building something and learning to work with the tools so a CAD program popped into my head. I don't know much about them, but I do know there are free programs out there to help design 2 and 3-D projects. This is one site I found when I googled CAD.
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-cad-program.htm.
I understand your frustration during the summer!!!It is hard to get others to think about the new year in July but at least you're gathering your thoughts. Maybe you can find enough of your own activities that you can redesign your curriculum. Thank goodness there are free options out there but the hard part is finding them!! Maybe your media specialist could hook you up?? Good luck and try not to get frustrated! It will all work out once the kids come back to school. As we all know, they're coming, ready or not! :)
Shelley
Shelley,
DeleteYou are right on target that my classes are about building something and learning to work with the tools. The only difference is that now the tools are all technology driven. I do have a CAD module. I have no idea what program I am using, though! I think it is just 2D. Adding 3D would be fun.
Thank goodness for free options! It is true that the harder part is finding them. The media specialist at my school is a wonderful resource. She will help me, I am sure. I just need to wait for everyone to be back at school. And you are right, they are coming!!

Math Teacher Deb,
ReplyDeleteThe technology teachers at my school are involved in the TSA club. Check it out as maybe it can help to provide some direction. How can technology standards be 16 years old? That sounds absurd. It sounds to me like you are ready for a little less talk and a lot more action. Switching content areas can be challenging for anyone. I'm a math teacher in Georgia, and as you already know I'getting my 3rd set of standards in 4 years this year. I've basically switched content areas myself.
I wish you the best of luck with your transition, and with your game plan. I would like to know why you got out of math.
Allen,
DeleteI am not familiar with the TSA club. Thank you for the suggestion. I will definitely check it out. It is crazy that the standards are 16 years old. I agree that it is time for some action! I want to change things up a bit, but I would like to finish this Master's program first. Then, I will have more time to work on new ideas.
I know the frustration of new standards! You are right that it is just like changing content areas. Good luck this year. I was actually looking forward to another year of math. You asked why I got out of math. I did not have a choice. My principal told me that the only way he could ensure that I would have a job is if I switched to career tech. So, I decided that I like my job! Math is still my first love and I hope I will be back in that content area some day.
Debbie
Deb,
ReplyDeleteIn my county in Northwest Georgia, we are strongly encouraged to implement technology into our standards, even with the new common core. I believe that the common core standards will make it a bit easier to implement technology into the instruction after looking at some of the standards, especially in math. I am in awe that your technology lesson plans are 16 years old. I inherited some resource social studies lesson plans last year that were about that old and the teacher who was retiring swore by them . Needless to say, I threw those out and used lesson plans from another teacher at my school who used technology every day. Good luck with your new content this year!
Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI am in Southeast Georgia. We are also strongly encouraged to implement technology into our standards. The common core standards bring technology even more into play. One thing I will need to do this year is tie my modules to the common core standards. I am expecting that I will need to rewrite many of them to accommodate those standards.
The district likes the way this career technology class is being taught. I do not want to change up too much too fast. My plan is to slowly replace modules with more current topics. Even though it is a technology class, I am not teaching how to use technology the way we are learning it here at Walden. I am not teaching computer skills like PowerPoint or Word. I am teaching how to use technology to enhance construction, industry, engineering, etc. Does that make sense? I would love to hear some ideas of ways to make what I am learning here mesh with what I have to teach.
Debbie
Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI teach Engineering and Technology Education and have been doing so for the past fifteen years. It has been quite the transition from teaching shop style classes in woodworking. When I transitioned to GA the majority of the coursework was built around a modular set up. Now we have gotten away from all of the modules and we focus on project based learning. It has been a great journey.
I also would recommend that you do start a TSA chapter at your school. I have had a chapter for the past six school years and it gives your students some great opportunities and it also gives you the opportunity to network with fellow teachers in your state.
You will also have access to the CTAERN network once you become a TSA member where there are many resources that are detailed for you on each standard for your particular classes.
Good luck and let me know if I can be of any assistance.
Tim,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the suggestions! The classroom I am inheriting is set up in modules. I would love to hear what you are doing that is project based. I will definitely check out the resources available at TSA and CTAERN. You teach high school, right? I will be teaching middle school. Do you have a website? My school one is flashmedia.glynn.k12.ga.us/webpages/dvanotteren/index.cfm. I inherited the webpage, and have not updated it yet. So, you can see what has been done in the past.
Again, I would be interested in any assistance you are willing to give! Thanks!
Debbie
