Carrying Out my GAME Plan

The journey of my GAME plan continues today with consideration of how I will implement this plan. What resources or additional information will I need? What steps have I taken so far? What is my intended learning strategy? These are the questions that I will attempt to answer in this installment.

In order to be proficient with the technologies I will be using in my new position, I need to spend time learning about the equipment. In talking with a colleague this week, he suggested I simply type the name and model number of the piece of equipment into Google and YouTube and see what information is already out there. I thought that was a great idea, and frankly, I never would have thought of it! So, I will need Internet access, names and model numbers, and some type of bookmarking application to save videos that I find.

Another resource I will need to carry out my plan is to conference with the teacher who was in the position before me and to go over all of the documents he has given me. The documents are in digital format, so I will need access to a computer and the appropriate programs to view the documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). To conference with the teacher, I will need to find time when he is available to meet. Summer vacation being what it is, this might be the most difficult resource of all!

My learning strategy is to work through as much of the material and equipment as possible on my own, noting where I need help as I go along. In order to utilize my colleague’s and my time most effectively, I need to be ready with questions when I meet with him. For some of the information, it is simply a matter of making time to figure it out. For some of the equipment, I need to see it in use to understand the principles behind it.

Already, I have a bookmarking application set up. I use delicious.com. This is convenient because I can see my bookmarks from any computer with Internet access. I have been in contact with the previous teacher about setting up a time to meet in the classroom. This will happen over the next two weeks. I have started looking at some of the documents that go with the modules. So, things are moving along.

The other goal in my GAME plan is to engage in professional growth and leadership to explore creative application of technology to improve student learning. “Just having computers and software in the classroom is not significant; how the educators use those computers and that software to promote learning is far more important” (King-Sears & Evmenova, 2007, p.6). For this goal, I will need access to the Internet, blogs of other career technology teachers, an aggregator to keep track of blog subscriptions, and contact with other career technology teachers in my district.

My learning strategy is to contact the other career technology teachers in my district. I hope that they can point me toward professional organizations to join and blogs to read. I will also have the opportunity to see what they are doing in their classrooms. Hopefully, we can share ideas and strategies.

I use Google Reader for my aggregator. I already follow several technology blogs. While these are helpful, they do not target the areas of technology that I need. I will continue to search for more specific Internet resources. If any of my colleagues in this learning community have suggestions, I would love to hear them!

  1. Great idea of typing your technology tools into the computer to see what ideas come up. I would have never thought of that. Thanks and good luck.

    1. Rachel,

True, I never would have thought of it, either. It makes me wonder what other obvious answers I am missing! It also makes me wonder if I am ready to teach this class. I feel like such a dinosaur sometimes. I wish I was a digital native so that these ideas would come more naturally for me!

  2. Deb,
I guess our school may be behind the times, but what exactly are you covering in a "career technology" class? You are on the right track of creating a PLC of sorts by consulting with the past teacher who had the job and with other teachers in of career technology. I started a new job of talented and gifted facilitator at the high school and I so appreciated the help that I got from the elementary and junior high gifted instructor as well as the other instructors in my area. I also have joined the Iowa Talented and Gifted teachers association which has proved invaluable. Is there a state or national association for career technology that you could join? Be sure to keep track of the steps you have taken during your GAME plan because the collection of artifacts as you work through this process will be great for your prooessional development portfolio. 1. Rhonda,

I get to teach 15 different modules: digital audio communications, computer aided publishing, robotics, electricity, video production, computer numerical control, digital photography, research & design, engineering, computer aided drafting, flight technology, space technology, 3-D computer animation, inventions & innovations, and weather & meteorology. How is that for an intimidating list?! I am very glad for the support of the former teacher. Your idea of joining an association is a good one. I need to figure out which one matches the best. Thanks also for the tip on keeping track of artifacts for my portfolio. Good idea!

  3. Deb,

The plans you have in place will help you prepare for your new position. Your colleague was right about Google. Google is a great resource to find information about almost anything. The social booking site is an excellent tool to help you organize useful websites. One of your best resources will be the other technology teachers in your district. Hopefully you will be able to schedule some time to meet with them before the beginning of the school year. I am sure you are not the only technology teacher feeling a little anxious at this point. Your plan to work through the material and equipment will certainly help you prepare for your new position. Once again good luck!

    1. Eric,

Thanks for the encouraging response! I am very overwhelmed at the thought of teaching this class in just a few weeks. The Google tip was a great one. I need to pick this guy's brain some more. He lives at the other end of the state, but thanks to technology, we can chat! I contacted the former teacher in my position today and made a plan to get together in the coming weeks. That makes me feel better, too. And, my principal sent me an email about an upcoming technology teachers' meeting at the beginning of the year. So, my bases are starting to be covered. I just need to keep working at it.

    2. I have used google for so much over the past few school years especially when looking for help with software issues. I utilize some sophisticated CAD software and unfortunately I do not have all of the answers at all times for my students. Google and youtube are a great help when trying to find quick information on how to do particular things with the software.

  4. Tim,

The CAD module and the CNC mill module are two that I need to spend some time learning. Those two, along with the video mixer board are probably the scariest pieces of technology for me right now. I am confident that I will learn it, I just need time! I like your idea of using Google and YouTube for software issues. I definitely could use that idea in my classroom when I cannot figure out a question for my students and time is critical. Thanks!

  5. Hello!,
A fellow math teacher. Will you still be teaching math or just the technology class? I have never used delicious.com but it sounds like it is a great tool for seeing your most important bookmarks on all computers, and I think I will use it.

I am a lot like you in that I use google a lot a search for uses of technology but the best help I have found is from colleagues. Some of the younger teachers than me seem a lot more technology savvy than I am. It is difficult to keep up with the changing times.
    Thank you for your ideas

  6. Scott,

I will only be teaching technology this year. I guess I will need to change the name of my blog! I really like the tagging options on delicious.com. I use it for any website I want to save. Although, lately I have been exploring Evernote. I might end up switching. I like many of the features offered there, too.

I don't know how old you are, but I am getting up there in age myself. No chance that I am a digital native! I have a hard time keeping up with all of the changes, too. Oh well, maybe this will keep us young!
